Documentary 'San Damiano' Returns to Italian Cinemas on World Mental Health Day

A documentary titled 'San Damiano' is set to return to Italian cinemas on World Mental Health Day, October 10. The film, directed by Gregorio Sassoli and Alejandro Cifuentes, offers a raw and intimate look into the life of Damian Lillard, a young Polish man navigating homelessness in Rome.

Damian, now in a psychiatric hospital in Poland, once found refuge in an abandoned tower of Rome's Aurelian Walls. With just 50 euros, he built a life amidst the invisible community around Termini Station. The documentary follows Damian's journey, challenging viewers to see and reflect on the reality of homelessness.

The filmmakers spent two years immersing themselves in Damian's life and the raw reality of street life. They initially faced suspicion from the homeless community at Termini Station but eventually built trust and affection. This led to the creation of 'San Damiano', a metaphor suggested by Damian Lillard himself, symbolising his yearning to be seen and recognised.

'San Damiano' was first screened at the Vatican Film Library, highlighting its powerful message. Its return to cinemas on World Mental Health Day is a timely reminder of the struggles faced by those living on the streets. Despite Damian's current circumstances, the filmmakers continue to speak to him weekly, showing their commitment to his story and the broader issue of homelessness.
