Deer-Proof Your Garden: Choosing the Right Fence

Deer can cause substantial damage to gardens and crops. While repellents may not always be effective, fencing can provide a reliable solution. Understanding deer behavior and choosing the right fence is crucial.

Before installing a fence, observe deer behavior. If they're jumpers, a taller fence is needed. If they sneak around obstacles, a solid barrier is best.

Single strand electric fences, deer mesh, and netting are easy to install. However, for high deer populations, a durable wooden fencing of at least 8 feet (2 m.) high is recommended. Multiple line electric fences and tall wooden fences are more effective but costly.

Deer have poor depth perception, so a visible fence is important. Mark single strand electric fences with bright tape. For added deterrence, bait them with peanut butter.

Deer netting should be tilted to prevent deer from barreling through it. For a high deer population, a durable wooden wildlife fencing system of around 2 to 2.5 meters high is suitable. This can cost several tens to hundreds of euros per meter.

To protect gardens from deer, understanding their behavior and choosing the right fence is key. While simpler fences may work, high deer populations may require more robust and costly solutions. Always ensure the fence is visible to deter deer effectively.
