Reduced Swimming Pool Attendance in Berlin - Decline in Attendees at Berlin's Open-Air Pools
Berlin's public pools and Wannsee beach have seen a decrease in visitors this summer season, with approximately 110,000 fewer visitors compared to the same period last year, according to data from the municipal company.
As of July 27, a total of 760,000 visitors have been recorded since the season began at the end of April. Despite the drop in numbers, the number of written bans issued has increased by 15, reaching 119 in the first three months of the season.
The CEO of Berlin's Bathing Operations, Johannes Kleinsorg, attributed the decrease in visitors to the weather. He stated that the cooler and rainy weather has not been very inviting for swimming. However, he emphasised that the atmosphere in the pools has been good, and the increase in bans is not significant.
To better manage visitor flows, the municipal company is attempting to implement an online occupancy indicator. This tool will allow visitors to check the number of people at various pools before deciding which one to visit.
On hot days in June and early July, there were large crowds at some public pools. During those days, the municipal company reported more than 60,000 visitors daily. When the number of visitors is fewer, the number of security personnel is reduced to save costs.
Security measures are in place to manage unrest and fights among young people and men, as there were last year. These measures are aimed at ensuring a safe and enjoyable experience for all visitors.
Further investigation would be needed to identify the exact reasons for this season's decrease in visitors. Possible factors could include changes in local regulations, maintenance closures, increased entry costs, shifts in visitor preferences, or competing attractions.
For more information, recent weather reports, local news on pool or beach operations, or official visitor statistics could provide insights into the reasons behind the decrease in visitors this summer season.

- The Commission may find it interesting to consult on the draft regulation regarding lifestyle improvements in home-and-garden settings, considering the decrease in visitors at Berlin's public pools and beaches this summer, which could potentially be influenced by changes in local regulations.
- As the municipal company adopts measures to reduce security personnel on less crowded days at public pools to save costs, homeowners might consider investing in home swimming pools to maintain their recreational lifestyle, potentially impacting the number of visitors in future seasons.
