Day of confrontation in Neu-Isenburg: a clear demonstration of tolerance and human compassion

On September 14, 2023, the city of Neu-Isenburg hosted an event titled 'Defend Yourself,' aimed at raising awareness about societal issues and promoting self-defense, civil courage, and violence prevention. The event, organized in partnership with the federal program 'Democracy lives!', took place at Hugenottenhalle.

Christoph Singer, representing the 'Partnership for Democracy Neu-Isenburg,' presented the federal program and emphasized the importance of such events for promoting democracy and civil courage in society. The association 'Tuğc̈e Albayrak e.V.,' founded by the family, also played a significant role in the event, advocating for more civil courage.

The day was filled with various activities. Krav Maga trainers demonstrated self-defense techniques using all means in an emergency. Meanwhile, Selatthin Gülsel, founder of Selagym, trained a large group of children from different ages and backgrounds, reflecting the spirit of the day: respect and tolerance. The 'Defend Yourself - Krav Maga School' and 'Selagym Gravenbruch' showcased their skills in a boxing ring.

The event brought to light unsettling societal issues, including the high numbers of violent acts in Germany and the impact of sexualized and physical violence on women. A poignant moment came when Doğuş Albayrak gave a speech remembering his sister Tuğçe Albayrak, who lost her life in 2014 while defending two girls from harassment.

Mayor Dirk Gene Hagelstein gave an opening speech, setting the tone for the day. Both clubs offered open trial training for visitors to participate, allowing everyone to learn and practice self-defense techniques. The event emphasized peaceful exchange and respectful interaction despite its combat theme.

In conclusion, the 'Defend Yourself' event was a powerful reminder of the importance of self-defense, civil courage, and violence prevention in our society. It served as a platform for open discussions, training, and remembrance, and it is hoped that such events will continue to inspire and empower individuals to stand up against violence and promote a safer, more democratic society.
