Throngs of cyclists swarmed Berlin in response to the General German Bicycle Club (ADFC)'s bike rally, despite the intermittent drizzle. The event, dubbed "All on Bikes!", pulled in participants from far-off regions, with estimates ranging between 13,500 and 25,000 cyclists by organizers and police respectively.

Good vibes despite the rain

Participants tackled approximately 20 routes, covering a total of 2,000 kilometers, on various timings starting in the early morning or even through the night. City-dwellers from Szczecin, Leipzig, and Dessau weren't deterred from joining the fun. A fan-favorite children's tour of Berlin's city center also drew a crowd. Preliminary reports confirm no major mishaps.

Weather forecasters warned of incoming thunderstorms and heavier rain, but when most participants reached Berlin's Great Star, they found sunny skies alleviating their soaked conditions. Organizers exclaimed, "It's amazing! Drenched, hot, but there's positive energy everywhere at the ADFC bike rally."

To accommodate the onslaught of cyclists, key arteries like the Avus and A100 South Ring highways, as well as numerous side streets, were temporarily closed to cars. Officials encouraged alternative routes to enter the city center, such as public transportation or personal cycling, and participants were invited to hop on the routes at any juncture.

ADFC ties the bike rally to political demands directed at Berlin's Senate. According to Susanne Grittner from the ADFC Berlin board,' the recent turmoil in the capital's traffic policies has been disastrous. The Senate has been abolishing 30 km/h zones, slashing bike budgets, and stalling neighborhood traffic calming measures.adequate bike lanes are the need of the hour.
