Customs Raid in Viersen Finds 12 Illegally Present Workers

On Friday, September 19, 2025, the Financial Control of Illegal Work (FKS) of the Customs conducted inspections in the hotel and catering industry across the Viersen district. Supported by local authorities, the inspections focused on ensuring compliance with Germany's general minimum wage and social security obligations, as well as detecting illegal employment and receipt of social benefits.

A total of 156 employees were inspected during the operation. Customs officers, along with local regulatory offices, found 12 individuals who were illegally present in the country. The inspections were conducted by around 60 employees from the Main Customs Office Krefeld, with locations in Krefeld and Mönchengladbach. The local regulatory office (Ordnungsamt) of the Viersen district was responsible for cooperation with the Financial Controller of the Customs Authority during these inspections.

The hotel and catering industry, being one of the largest and most employment-intensive sectors, is subject to the regulations of the Minimum Wage Act (MiLoG). The general minimum wage in Germany has been 12.82 euros per hour since January 1, 2025.

The inspections, which targeted illegal work and non-compliance with minimum wage and social security obligations, resulted in the discovery of 12 individuals illegally present in the country. The Customs, along with local authorities, play a crucial role in securing social systems and state revenues by combating such illegal activities in the hotel and catering sector.
