If you're looking for a fun and easy craft project, look no further! This DIY project involves creating marbled mugs using nail polish, and the best part is that it won't break the bank.

Materials Needed

  • 2 mugs (preferably found at Goodwill for $.79 each)
  • Nail polish (not quick dry)
  • Dishwasher Safe Mod Podge
  • Toothpicks
  • Acetone and cotton swabs
  • A container (this will get ruined, so make sure it's old or disposable)
  • Printable sayings in SVG format (optional), die cutter and permanent vinyl (optional)

Equipment Needed

  • Disposable water basin

Steps to Create Your Marbled Mugs

  1. Fill the disposable water basin with warm water.
  2. Add nail polish to the water close to the surface to prevent clumping. To mix colors, use a toothpick and pour polishes in various areas on the water’s surface.
  3. Dip the mugs in the polish mixture while the polish is still wet to avoid clumping. Be sure to only dip the mugs below the lip line for health reasons.
  4. Once the mugs have been dipped, let them dry for a few minutes.
  5. Remove any excess polish on the bottom of the mug with nail polish remover and let it set overnight.
  6. If desired, seal the mugs with Dishwasher Safe Mod Podge to extend their life. Apply 2 to 3 thin, even coats of the Mod Podge, allowing each coat to dry for 30-60 minutes before applying the next. Let the final coat dry thoroughly, ideally overnight, to make sure it's fully cured and sealed.
  7. For a smooth finish, you can lightly sand between coats with very fine sandpaper, but be gentle not to damage the nail polish layer.
  8. It is important to note that the mugs are not dishwasher safe right out of the gate, and should not be microwaved.

Tips and Suggestions

  • Working quickly is important when making marbled mugs as hot water slows the setting process of the nail polish.
  • The creator suggests trying the top rack of the dishwasher, but the nail polish will still wear down over time.
  • Using Dishwasher Safe Mod Podge on the mugs is recommended, but hand washing is still recommended after using the Mod Podge.
  • If you'd like to add a personal touch, you can use printable sayings on the mugs with a die cutter and permanent vinyl.

This project makes for a great adult craft and can even serve as homemade gifts. So why not give it a try and create some unique, marbled mugs of your own? A video demonstrating the process is available for those who need a visual guide.
