Construction progresses on the latest community park
Transforming Neuss's Former Racetrack into a Citizens' Park
In the heart of Neuss, Germany, a significant transformation is underway. The city's former horse racing track is being metamorphosed into a vibrant citizens' park, as part of the preparations for the 2026 State Garden Show, known as the Landesgartenschau.
The recreational area, a collaboration between the Landesgartenschau Neuss 2026 GmbH and the supporting association "Green Heart - Citizens' Park Neuss", invites visitors to year-round activities and relaxation. The park will feature a pavilion to serve visitors, as well as new structures and plantings of trees.
In a bid to ensure the park is accessible to all, barrier-free entrances will be built, despite a significant height difference. These entrances will provide easy access for everyone, making the park a connection between the Rhine and the city center.
Concerning the environmental impact, while specific details about tree felling numbers and conservation strategies are yet to be confirmed, typical practices in such redevelopment projects involve careful assessment of existing trees, preservation of mature and valuable specimens where possible, and compensatory planting to maintain ecological balance.
Experts from the nature conservation council will accompany the fine-tuning on-site, and the number of trees to be felled will be determined after a joint on-site inspection. Efforts will be made to adjust the planning to retain trees in individual cases, with a goal to retain large trees and valuable hedges where possible.
It is worth noting that the construction process will not affect the habitats of bats and birds. The nature conservation council has approved the measures for the construction of the citizens' park, demonstrating their support for the goal of designing the park while preserving the ecologically valuable stock.
The Landesgartenschau Neuss 2026 GmbH, the executing organization, is responsible for both hosting the Landesgartenschau and transforming the former horse racing track into a citizens' park. The planned measures include hosting the Landesgartenschau from April to October 2026.
As the project progresses, the citizens' park is set to become a cherished addition to Neuss, offering a green oasis in the heart of the city. For more detailed information on tree felling numbers and ecological preservation measures for the Neuss racetrack park, it may be necessary to consult official Neuss municipality or state garden show planning documents or environmental impact assessments that cover the project.
In this transformation, the park's landscape might also include an other section dedicated to Environmental-Science, providing educational exhibits about local flora and fauna. Additionally, home-and-garden enthusiasts may find the park's pavilion and new structures appealing, serving as a unique aspect to complement their lifestyle.
