Complimentary Land Exploration at the Frankish Free Land Museum in August
On the weekend of August 23-24, the Franconian Open-Air Museum Fladungen will host the FreiLandAugust event, a special festival that promises an immersive experience for visitors of all ages.
This year's festival will offer a unique opportunity to travel back in time as the Rhön-Zügle steam train will be in operation on Sunday, August 24. Visitors can enjoy a scenic ride from Mellrichstadt or Ostheim v. d. Rhön and reach the museum in style.
The main attraction of FreiLandAugust is the artist collective Rhön, showcasing their talents at the museum grounds. In addition, visitors will find a variety of activities designed to celebrate outdoor life and traditional culture.
For adults, the event includes demonstrations of traditional crafts and skills, opportunities to engage with historical farming and artisan techniques, exhibits highlighting regional culture and heritage, and live music and cultural performances.
Children will not be left out, with hands-on workshops where they can try crafts or activities inspired by traditional rural life, interactive storytelling sessions, games and activities tailored to engage younger visitors in the museum's themes, and opportunities to explore the outdoor museum in an engaging, educational way.
Pixi, the little forest gnome, will be available for a commemorative photo on Saturday and Sunday from 1 to 3 pm, either in the museum grounds or in the area of the special exhibition "Pixi - 70 years of little books".
A cooking program featuring historical recipes will take place in the three-sided courtyard from Leutershausen, using original recipes from old Rhön cookbooks and ingredients from the museum gardens. Participation is encouraged and tasting is included in the bakery from Oberbernhards. Fresh baked goods will be available from 11 am on both days of the FreiLandAugust, with sweet or savory treats from cinnamon rolls to anise pretzels to the museum's flatbread, sold on-site while supplies last.
Sonja Wiesner will offer visitors the opportunity to creatively design postcards using carved wood, linoleum stamps, and the frottage technique. She will also demonstrate how her intricate stamps are made during the FreiLandAugust. Wood sculptors from the Rhön region will give insights into their creative process, and the anniversary exhibition "Pixi - 70 years of little books" will be on display until the end of the season on November 9 in Fladungen.
A guided tour of the studio exhibition "Parallelen" in the Truchsess House from Oberhohenried is scheduled for Sunday, August 24, at 2 pm, led by photographer Markus Büttner and museum director Niklas Hertwig. Johanna Barth and Johanna Helle will carve small wooden sculptures on-site and display selected works in wood and glass. Claudia Fink will provide insights into the art of spoon carving and invite visitors to participate in creating imaginative spoon figures.
Overall, FreiLandAugust provides an immersive experience where visitors of all ages can enjoy and learn about Franconian rural traditions and outdoor living in a festive setting. Don't miss out on this unique opportunity to step back in time and celebrate the beauty of Franconian culture and tradition.
Enjoy a diverse assortment of activities at the FreiLandAugust event, from savoring traditional food-and-drink offerings like the museum's flatbread and historical recipes in the three-sided courtyard, to participating in hands-on home-and-garden workshops. For entertainment, catch live music and cultural performances, or craft postcards using wooden stamps and the frottage technique. Whether you're an adult or a child, there's something for everyone at this immersive lifestyle festival celebrating Franconian tradition and outdoor living.
