"Complimentary Journey on 'Sun Train' Transports Hundreds to Lake Constance"
Elderly and Disabled Residents of Baden-Württemberg Enjoy Annual "Sun Train" Trip to Lake Constance
570 elderly and individuals with disabilities from various cities across Baden-Württemberg gathered at Lake Constance on Sunday, braving the inclement weather to embark on the popular "Sun Train" outing.
Departing from Stuttgart, Aalen, Freudenstadt, Göppingen, Nürtingen, Weingarten, and Stockach, the group boarded two excursion boats of the White Fleet, accompanied by lifeguards from the DLRG. For those seeking spiritual comfort, a service was offered under pavilions at the harbor before the day's events commenced.
Despite the damp weather, the anticipation and gratitude among participants were palpable. One attendee shared, "Everyone disembarked the ship with smiles last time we were here. It’s heartening to see that there are people who still strive for ideals." A 91-year-old at the next table added, "It’s beautiful."
Initiated over 54 years ago, the "Sun Train" event started as a special train ride, hence its name. Since 2005, buses, ambulances, and rescue vehicles have been utilized instead, traveling in a network from various locations in Baden-Württemberg to Lake Constance.
After the service at Friedrichshafen harbor, the group embarked on a three-hour sailing trip on Lake Constance. Aboard, they were served hot potato soup with sausages, while 130 volunteers ensured seamless operations. Music bands from Wolfegg and Bergatreute provided entertainment, while medical personnel were stationed on each ship in case of any emergencies.
"Sun Train" participants do not incur any costs, as the event is solely funded by donations and sponsorships, according to the Maltese Cross. The action occurs every two years since 1971.
While the "Sun Train" does not have a formal connection to the state’s efforts to support elderly and disabled individuals, Baden-Württemberg is known for its commitment to accessibility and inclusivity for people with disabilities, offering various programs and services to aid in this mission.
The "Sun Train" event, initiated over five decades ago, not only offers an annual outing to Lake Constance for elderly and disabled residents of Baden-Württemberg but also serves as a symbol of outdoor-living and lifestyle, promoting home-and-garden experiences beyond the confines of their daily routines.
Engaging in this excursion, participants are not limited by their physical conditions, but rather, they indulge in a day filled with music, entertainment, fellowship, and spiritual comfort, fostering a sense of community and companionship, thereby enhancing their quality of life.
