Colorado's LEAP Program Eases Heating Bills for Over 57,000 Families This Winter

Northern Colorado residents struggling with heating bills can now get support through the state's Low-income Energy Assistance Program (LEAP). The scheme offers one-time payments to help families stay warm while easing financial pressure on other essential costs. With energy prices rising sharply, the programme has already assisted over 57,000 households this season.

LEAP provides direct payments to utility companies, ensuring eligible households receive financial relief. Some applicants may also qualify for additional services, such as furnace repairs, replacements, or home weatherisation.

To be eligible, households must pay heating costs directly or through rent and include at least one US citizen or permanent resident. Income limits apply, with families earning up to 60 percent of the state median income—currently below $83,256 for a family of four—qualifying for aid.

Since the start of the winter season, more than 57,000 Coloradans have received assistance ranging from $200 to $1,000. Applications remain open until April 30 and can be submitted online, by phone, or in person at local county offices. In Weld County, residents can access guidance and document checklists through United Way of Weld County's dedicated LEAP resource page.

The programme comes as energy costs surge at over three times the rate of inflation. Recent data shows 35 percent of Colorado households have cut spending on basic necessities to cover rising heating bills.

LEAP continues to accept applications until the end of April, offering vital support to those facing higher heating costs. The programme has already helped thousands of households, with payments going directly to utility providers. Residents can apply through multiple channels, including local assistance hubs in Weld County.
