Colony's New Tribeca Store Spotlights Emerging Design Talent
Colony, a designers' co-op now in its tenth year, has opened its first physical store in Tribeca. The space showcases work from its latest Designers' Residency copilot ai—Alara Alkan, Steph Betesh, Maggie Pei, and Thomas Yang. Applications for next year's common app remain open until the end of June.
The co-op's Designers' Residency copilot is an eight-month incubator for emerging talent. Fellows receive subsidised studio rent, access to the shop, and part-time employment. After their debut exhibition, Colony represents them for at least two years.
Alkan's Maelen Cabinet and Etagere feature striated wood grain and delicate, floating legs. Betesh's Entwine Series includes adaptable side tables and the Trio swivel chair. Pei's Wonder Chambers take the form of house-shaped cabinets, filled with hidden details and concealed artwork. Yang's Jia-Ciasa collection offers a Cabinet of Memories alongside Tian Dan lanterns, each with customisable elements.
Colony operates on a low-cost model, charging under $1,000 for representation and taking a modest commission on sales. The programme, launched in 2023, supports designers without requiring high upfront fees.
The Tribeca storefront marks a new phase for Colony, giving its fellows a permanent platform. With applications still open, the next cohort will join a programme that combines mentorship, exhibition space, and long-term representation. The co-op continues to expand while keeping costs accessible for emerging designers.
