Chýně's New Eco-Friendly School Sets a Standard for Sustainable Learning

A new elementary school has opened in Chýně, a fast-growing town on the outskirts of Prague. Designed by OVA architects, the building combines modern learning spaces with eco-friendly features. The project arrives as the suburb's population has nearly doubled over the past decade.

The school's design splits into two main wings. One houses classrooms and shared areas, while the other contains sports facilities and support services. A central hall links both sections and extends into two landscaped courtyards—one for public use, the other for children's play.

The building adapts to the sloping site with multiple entrance levels and a planted roof terrace. Outside, ceramic panels clad the walls, and newly planted trees provide shade alongside roof canopies. These elements help reduce heat buildup, a common issue in urban areas.

Inside, flexible seating and informal learning zones encourage self-directed study. Natural ventilation and photovoltaic panels cut energy use, aligning with passive and active green technologies. At the upper edge of the site, an athletics field doubles as a football pitch, complete with a refreshment area.

Chýně's rapid growth—from 1,800 to over 3,500 residents in ten years—has driven demand for new infrastructure. The school follows recent upgrades like the 2022 primary school, expanded roads (including the D6 highway link to Prague), and ongoing public transport improvements. Compared to neighbouring suburbs, Chýně's 94% population increase and faster utility upgrades (due for completion by 2025) mark it as one of the region's most dynamic areas.

The school's opening supports Chýně's expanding community while setting a standard for sustainable design. Its mix of flexible learning spaces, green technology, and outdoor amenities reflects the town's focus on modern infrastructure. The project also addresses the needs of a population that has nearly doubled in a decade.
