17th Annual Back 2 School Free Haircutz Offers Free Haircuts and Community Support for Madison Students
On Sunday, August 24, 2025, the 17th annual Back 2 School Free Haircutz event will take place at the Alliant Energy Center in Madison, Wisconsin. This community-focused event provides free haircuts for children in grades Kindergarten through 12th grade, aiming to help them return to school with confidence.
The event, which started 17 years ago at JP Hair Design, has grown significantly over the years and moved to the larger Alliant Energy Center venue in 2018 to accommodate the increased demand. This year, the goal is to provide 1,000 free haircuts, surpassing last year’s record of over 800.
The event offers basic haircuts, including fades, afros, even cuts, mohawks, tapers, and hairlines, but no designs. Alongside haircuts, children will also have the opportunity to receive back-to-school supplies and take home a new book from The Madison Reading Project.
The Back 2 School Free Haircutz is organized by Jeff “JP” Patterson, the owner of JP Hair Design, in partnership with the Ingold Family Foundation. Over 30 barbers from the Madison area will participate in the event, providing as many free haircuts as possible.

In addition to haircuts and back-to-school supplies, music by DJ Terrence J will entertain attendees throughout the day, fostering a lively and supportive atmosphere.
This event is a long-standing community initiative designed to help Madison-area kids start the school year with confidence at no cost to their families.
