Chesil Cliff House Finally Sold After Decade-Long Self-Build Saga

Chesil Cliff House, a remarkable self-build project in North Devon, has finally found a buyer after years on the market. The sale, reported first by Homebuilding & Renovating, marks the end of a long and challenging journey for its owner, Edward Short.

The property, which took over a decade to complete, was originally planned as an 18-month project with a budget of £1.8 million. However, it ended up costing millions more and resulting in significant debt for Short. Despite the financial struggles and failed attempts, Short remained determined, earning Kevin McCloud's admiration. McCloud described Chesil Cliff House as 'a defiant monument to perseverance' in an emotional episode of Grand Designs.

The sale of Chesil Cliff House, which fetched £4.35 million, has left Short with complex feelings. While relieved to finally sell the property, he admits to being reluctant to part with it. McCloud also expressed 'mixed emotions' about the sale, acknowledging the house's significance as a testament to Short's perseverance.

Chesil Cliff House, a symbol of ambition and determination, has been sold after more than a decade of setbacks. The sale brings closure to Short's long and challenging saga, while also serving as a reminder of the rewards and human costs of ambitious self-build projects.
