Chemnitz plants 330 new street trees to boost urban greenery by May

Southwestern Chemnitz is set to gain over 330 new street trees by mid-May. The planting initiative, costing around €1 million, aims to improve urban greenery and climate resilience. Work has already started in Neefestraße, where 150 trees have gone into the ground.

The project covers multiple streets, with each location receiving different species. In Neefestraße, the focus is on lindens and ashes, planted in existing but empty tree pits. Wladimir-Sagorski-Straße will see 83 mixed plantings designed to withstand changing weather conditions.

Carl-Hamel-Straße will get 39 alders, while Winklhofer Straße is set for 26 maples. Hohensteiner Straße will feature 20 copper shadbushes. Across all five streets, a total of 42 tree species will be introduced. Contracted landscaping firms are handling the work, with maintenance guaranteed for three growing seasons. Residents may notice temporary traffic delays as planting continues over the coming weeks.

The new trees will expand Chemnitz's urban canopy and support local climate adaptation efforts. With planting underway and completion expected by mid-May, the city will soon see greener streetscapes. The €1 million investment ensures long-term care for the newly planted species.
