Chemnitz families build birdhouses to boost local wildlife conservation
A free family workshop will take place in Chemnitz to build birdhouses and promote environmental conservation. The event, called Max the Tit, encourages people to create nesting sites for local birds while learning about wildlife protection. Organisers have planned activities for all ages, from crafting to expert talks.
The workshop runs from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, March 7, at the Chemnitz Nature Conservation Station. Participants will construct nest boxes designed for great tits, blue tits, starlings, redstarts, and black redstarts. Materials will be provided, though donations are welcome to cover costs and support the Chemnitz Mycological Society.
Alongside the building sessions, experts will offer advice on protecting birds at home, in gardens, and on farms. The event also includes creative games and hands-on crafts for children and adults. This initiative is part of the Young Nature Guardians Chemnitz programme, organised by the Chemnitz Environmental Office, the Chemnitz Mycological Society, and the BUND Chemnitz regional group.
The project aims to give birds safer nesting options while giving people a chance to observe nature up close. No prior experience is needed, and all are invited to take part.
The workshop provides a practical way for families to help local bird populations. Nest boxes built during the event can be taken home or placed in suitable outdoor spaces. Organisers hope the initiative will raise awareness of bird conservation in the region.
