Chemnitz, the European Capital of Culture, has kicked off the Planting Festival 'Harvest', a celebration centered around the apple. The festival, part of the 'Lived Neighborhood' project, aims to boost biological diversity and engage the community. It features 30 programs on 12 stages, with over 1,000 apple trees already planted in the city area.

The festival offers a variety of activities, including culinary workshops and fruit tree pruning courses. So far, 700 different apple varieties have been planted, with another 600 expected by the end of the festival week on October 26. Events range from an apple cake parade to apple hymns and dances, and an apple rally.

The long-term care of the newly planted apple trees will be handled by partner institutions and volunteers, similar to other such projects. While the specific institutions and volunteers responsible for Chemnitz's trees are yet to be specified, local government departments and community groups often play a significant role in such endeavors.

The Planting Festival 'Harvest' in Chemnitz is not just about celebrating the apple; it's also about fostering community involvement and preserving biological diversity. With over 1,300 apple trees expected to be planted by the end of the festival, the project is set to leave a lasting impact on the city's green spaces.
