Centuries-Long Friendship Between Two Elephants in Tamil Nadu Unveiled

In the heart of Mudumalai, Nilgiris, resides a unique bond between two elderly elephants, Bhama (75) and Kamatchi (65), at the Theppakadu Elephant Camp. This friendship, spanning over five decades, has become a symbol of loyalty and love within the animal kingdom.

On Friendship Day 2025, Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer Supriya Sahu drew attention to this extraordinary friendship, highlighting its emotional depth and enduring nature. The Tamil Nadu Forest Department, which manages the camp, has been instrumental in nurturing such bonds among its captive elephants. The Theppakadu Elephant Camp, one of Asia's oldest, houses around 30 elephants and plays a crucial role in the conservation and welfare of these majestic creatures.

The camp's commitment to elephant care and conservation has been underscored by the emotional complexity and social bonds exhibited by Bhama and Kamatchi. Their shared days are filled with eating, resting, and enjoying sugarcane treats together, demonstrating a rare and cherished bond among elephants.

In a heartwarming gesture, the Tamil Nadu Forest Department installed life-sized elephant replicas crafted by local artisans from lantana camara at Chennai's Edward Elliott's Beach. These replicas were inspired by real elephants from Mudumalai National Park and aimed at raising awareness about wildlife conservation.

Supriya Sahu shared a video of Bhama and Kamatchi strolling side by side on social media, which quickly went viral, attracting widespread attention and admiration. Users expressed their joy and appreciation, acknowledging the great examples of friendship set by these elephants. One user commented, "Wow nice," while another exclaimed, "That's amazing."

The friendship between Bhama and Kamatchi serves a dual purpose: it provides livelihood opportunities to tribal communities by employing them to craft the life-sized elephant replicas, and it promotes ecological restoration by removing harmful plant species, such as lantana camara, from the ecosystem.

This heartwarming story of friendship between Bhama and Kamatchi is a testament to the importance of conservation efforts and the emotional lives of captive elephants. It serves as a powerful reminder of the bonds that can form between creatures, transcending species and boundaries, and the role that we all play in safeguarding these precious relationships.
