Wine Tourism on the Rise in the UK! 🚀

Celebratory Salute to English Wine Week: Key Summer Events to Anticipate

UK wine enthusiasts rejoice! The UK has now over 300 vineyards and wineries open to the public. You can plan a day trip or even a getaway, thanks to the grape symbol on brown tourist signposts pointing you in the right direction.

Wine tourism visitors skyrocketed in 2023, with a staggering 1.5 million visits recorded, marking a 55% increase from the previous year! And the trend doesn't seem to be slowing down, as we anticipate even higher figures for this year. Industry body, WineGB, predicts a 20% increase in vineyard visitor numbers through to 2029.

"Wine tourism helps us become more than a brand that people see on a restaurant wine list, but a place where passionate people are working to make an exceptionally high product offering," said Nick Toomey from Rathfinny Wine Estate. Rathfinny, an East Sussex producer, has been refining its tourism offerings since its inception in 2010, with the addition of restaurants, luxurious lodges, and summer events in partnership with like-minded brands.

Wine education and social interaction are at the core of the UK wine tourism experience, according to Nathaniel McConnell, winemaker, and family co-owner at Bluestone Vineyards in Wiltshire. "Tourism is essential not only for financial reasons but also for educational and social purposes. Connecting with our guests is important - it encourages spending, but it also enhances their experience through education and knowledge," emphasized McConnell.

A quarter of winery income in the UK comes from wine tourism, making it a crucial component of wineries' long-term success. To help plan your wine aficionado adventure, WineGB launched a travel planner in 2025, featuring everything from festivals and wine trains to cellar doors and stunning dining options.

Stay tuned for upcoming English and Welsh wine events this summer! From the vibrant North to the tranquil South, East, West, and Wales, there's never been a better time to immerse yourself in the world of English wine.

While specific growth rates for 2023-2029 aren't publicly available, global luxury travel trends indicate an upward trajectory. The rise in wine tourism is expected to bring significant benefits to UK wineries, including increased revenue, brand awareness, and investment in infrastructure.

Popular wineries across the UK attract visitors, such as the award-winning Bolney Wine Estate in Sussex, the renowned Chapel Down in Kent, and the picturesque Hush Heath Estate in Kent.
