Celebrating Mascha Kaleko: A Literary-Musical Evening
A literary-musical evening, 'My Life Was a Tightrope Walk', will commemorate Mascha Kaleko, the renowned poet who passed away 50 years ago. The event aims to keep her voice and poetry alive, celebrating her impact on a generation with her pointed, rhythmically clear, yet deeply felt verses.
Born in Galicia in 1907, Kaleko's career was cut short by rising nationalism, forcing her into exile first in the USA and later in Jerusalem. Her poems from this period, to be highlighted at the event, are marked by longing, alienation, and uprooting. They explore themes of loss of homeland and the experience of exile.
The evening will feature a biographical lyrical reading by Ingeborg Grau, accompanied by Kai Dorenkamp on piano and Matthias Lahrmann on clarinet and saxophone. Grau will paint a sensitive portrait of the woman behind the verses, keeping Kaleko's voice from being silenced. Margaux Kier, a Cologne actress and singer, will represent the sensitivity of Mascha Kaleko in the biographical reading.
The event is an appeal to remember and appreciate Mascha Kaleko's poetry as a voice for the simple, the honest, and the human in our world. Tickets can be purchased in advance for 15 euros at Ibbenbüren City Library or by phone at 05451 / 9314200 during specified opening hours.
