Cebu City Turns Plastic Waste into Roads, Urges Businesses to Recycle PET Bottles
Cebu City is taking significant steps towards reducing plastic waste and promoting sustainability. Mayor Nestor Archival Sr. has initiated a project to convert plastic waste into road materials, while the City Council is urging businesses and government offices to provide designated containers for polyethylene terephthalate (PET) bottles.
The City Council's proposal aligns with the mandate of RA 7160, empowering local government units to prioritize the welfare of their constituents. By encouraging responsible consumer behavior and facilitating recycling, the measure aims to support Cebu City's solid waste management and environmental protection programs.
Mayor Archival has started incorporating shredded PET bottles into asphalt, addressing the City's limited supply of asphalt and promoting more sustainable infrastructure solutions. The active participation of business establishments is vital in reducing, recovering, and recycling PET bottles, as improper disposal contributes significantly to environmental degradation. The proposal also encourages recycling practices, in line with RA 9003.
The Sangguniang Panlungsod secretary will ensure all business establishments within Cebu City receive copies of the resolution, fostering a collective effort in responsible plastic disposal and recycling. By turning plastic waste into road materials and encouraging recycling, Cebu City is setting an example for sustainable waste management and infrastructure development.
