Feline Puzzle: Why Cats Approach Individuals with Cat Phobia

By Annette Berger | 2 Min Read

In a peculiar quirk, cats have an uncanny ability to zero in on individuals who harbor a fear of them. This was evident with our childhood tomcat, who, despite his generally relaxed demeanor, would approach our neighbor with a cat phobia during a ladies' coffee gathering.

Although it seemed strange at the time, cat behavior researchers, such as Dennis C. Turner, suggest this behavior may be attributed to the cat's inability to read clear signals from people with a fear of felines.

Turner, a biologist who has researched the relationship between humans and house cats, explains that while cat lovers unabashedly show interest, people with a fear of cats do not emit such signals. This uncertainty confuses the animal, prompting it to seek contact.

The phenomenon of cats choosing those who fear them is not unprecedented, according to Turner. Cats are known to base their choices on subtle cues, including body language and scent, which typically draw them to calm and consistent individuals. However, when faced with individuals who exhibit fear, the cat's curiosity is piqued due to the variation in behavior.

To prevent such interactions, Turner advises restricting the cat's access to rooms where fearful individuals are present, thereby eliminating the opportunity for the cat to attempt to decipher the person's signals.

Cats' natural curiosity and reliance on scent and body language contribute to their behavior, with their perceived lack of clear signals towards humans due to the non-verbal nature of their communication.

  1. Dennis C. Turner's research in the field of cat behavior suggests that a cat's approach to individuals with a cat phobia might be due to the individual's lack of clear signals, which the cat relies on in understanding human behavior – a common occurrence in home-and-garden lifestyles where pets like cats are part of the family.
  2. In the realm of lifestyle and pet care, understanding the reasons behind a cat's behavior towards individuals with a cat phobia can help create a better environment for both the pet and its owner. For instance, following Turner's advice to limit the cat's access to rooms where fearful individuals are present can lead to a more peaceful home-and-garden setting.
