Burien and SeaTac Pay Residents to Restore Local Parks as Forest Stewards

Burien and SeaTac are looking for local residents to work as paid Forest Stewards. The role involves restoring and maintaining parks near me in both cities. Successful applicants will earn a quarterly stipend and receive training for the year-long programme.

The programme offers $500 every three months, plus a $600 stipend for training and gear. Stewards will also get tools, materials, and onsite instruction. Their main tasks include removing invasive plants, planting native species, and optionally leading community events.

Applicants must live near priority parks, enjoy outdoor work, and be physically active. In Burien, stewards may be assigned to parks like Arbor Lake, Hilltop, Salmon Creek, or Salmon Creek Ravine as part of the Green Burien Partnership. SeaTac's Green City Partnership will train stewards to restore green spaces across the city, with possible event leadership roles.

Training for SeaTac's programme begins in late March. The commitment requires about seven hours of work per month for a year. So far, 45 stewards have joined the programmes, with Seahurst Park in Burien and Angle Lake Park in SeaTac being the most frequently worked sites.

Funding comes from the USDA Forest Service Urban and Community Forestry Program, managed by the Washington State Department of Natural Resources.

Residents interested in the role can apply through the links provided for Burien and SeaTac. The programme provides financial support, training, and equipment for those helping to maintain local green spaces. Applications remain open for the upcoming training sessions.
