Brown Unveils Stephen Sondheim Amphitheater, Honoring Legend & Improving Accessibility
Brown University has unveiled its newest addition, the Stephen Sondheim Amphitheater, located in the heart of the renovated Ruth J. Simmons Quadrangle. The amphitheater, named after the legendary American composer and lyricist, improves accessibility for community members with physical disabilities and serves as a gathering and performing space for the Brown community.
The dedication ceremony for the Stephen Sondheim Amphitheater was a celebration of art and community. Longtime friends and collaborators of Sondheim delivered remarks, while Brown students and graduates performed iconic songs from his extensive repertoire. Notably, Professor of Music Dana Gooley, who taught a course dedicated to Sondheim's work, was present. Sondheim himself had guest lectured multiple times in this course, with his last visit occurring about five weeks before his death in 2021.
The revamped Simmons Quad, now equipped with tent-ready infrastructure for outdoor events and a new underground stormwater management system, has been transformed into a space where art and belonging converge. The amphitheater is designed to bring the Brown community together, making it an inclusive space for all.
The Stephen Sondheim Amphitheater stands as a testament to Brown University's commitment to accessibility, arts, and community. Named after a man who valued education highly, the amphitheater serves as a gathering place for the Brown community, ready to host performances and events that celebrate the arts and foster a sense of belonging.
