Bristol's River Malago to Reclaim Historic Features, Reduce Flood Risk in Bedminster Green Regeneration

Bristol City Council is set to restore the River Malago's historic features and reduce flood risk as part of the Bedminster Green regeneration scheme. The project aims to celebrate the city's industrial heritage, create high-quality green spaces, and support local wildlife.

The restoration will involve bringing part of the River Malago above ground and returning it to its natural form. This will help mitigate flooding risk by providing an extra 2,226m3 of flood storage. Measures include altering the river's flow speed, widening the river corridor, and removing non-native species. To improve public access, proposals include a new seating area and an accessible path and boardwalk along the river's edge. Metal grid bars, or trash screens, will be installed to trap debris and prevent blockages. The project is a collaboration between the city council, developers, architects, environmental agencies, and local community groups. If approved, construction will begin in phases from 2023, coordinated with other works at Bedminster Green.
