Bristol's River Malago Set for Major Restoration in Bedminster Green Regeneration
Bristol City Council, in collaboration with local environmental groups, has submitted a planning application for a significant river restoration project. The scheme, part of the Bedminster Green regeneration, aims to restore a section of the River Malago to its natural form, celebrate the city's industrial heritage, and mitigate flooding risks.
The project, set to commence in phases from 2023 and coordinate with other Bedminster Green works, involves several key aspects. It will restore the old penstock structure and improve the river's historic channel walls, preserving Bristol's industrial history. Additionally, proposals include creating a new seating area and an accessible path and boardwalk, enhancing public access to the river's edge.
The renaturation of the river will also support local wildlife. The project aims to alter the flow speed, widen the river corridor, and remove non-native species. Metal grid bars, or trash screens, will be installed to trap debris and prevent blockages, further aiding the river's health and reducing flooding risks. The restoration is expected to create an extra 2,226m3 of flood storage, providing additional protection for the area.
If approved, the River Malago restoration project promises to celebrate Bristol's industrial past while improving local biodiversity and flood resilience. The council's submission marks a significant step towards enhancing the river's environment and public spaces, contributing to the broader Bedminster Green regeneration scheme.
