Bremen Cracks Down on Littering With On-the-Spot Fines Starting 2025
Bremen's city cleaning service, DBS, is set to introduce a new 'Urban Environmental and Cleanliness Service'. This initiative, supported by Senator Henrike Müller, will enable DBS employees to issue warnings, record personal details, and collect fines for littering on the spot. The service aims to address common littering issues like cigarette butts and food remains in public spaces.
Starting mid-next year, trained DBS employees will have the authority to penalize littering immediately, thanks to a new ordinance. The service plans to initially target common littering issues such as cigarette butts, packaging, or food remains in public spaces. In the first year alone, around 1,200 littering cases are estimated to be fined.
To enhance its presence and identify illegal dumping, the DBS plans to add more staff in the coming years. The costs for this strengthened service will be covered by the DBS's waste fee budget.
The new 'Urban Environmental and Cleanliness Service' is expected to significantly improve Bremen's public spaces by discouraging littering. With trained employees actively enforcing cleanliness, the city aims to maintain a cleaner and more pleasant environment for its residents and visitors.
