Braunschweig's Bäckerklint to become a climate-friendly pocket park by 2026
A new green space is taking shape in Braunschweig's Bäckerklint area. The project will turn part of the neighbourhood into a climate-friendly pocket park for residents to relax and socialise. Funding comes from a federal programme aimed at boosting urban sustainability.
The initiative is part of the 'Regional Blue-Green Infrastructure in Urban Areas' funding scheme. It receives full financial backing from the Natural Climate Action Program (ANK), managed by the Federal Agency for Nature Conservation (BfN). Additional support is provided by the Braunschweig Regional Association.
Plans include removing some paved surfaces, planting more greenery, and improving stormwater drainage. Despite these changes, existing parking spaces will remain. The goal is to create a model for climate-resilient urban development in the wider Braunschweig region. Residents have until **8 March** to share their views in an online survey. Their feedback will help set the criteria for a design competition, with the winning proposal set to be chosen by late summer 2026.
The project will reshape Bäckerklint into a greener, more functional public area. Survey responses will directly influence the park's final design. Once complete, the space is expected to offer a cooler, more sustainable environment for the community.
