Braunschweig Launches Bee-Friendly Seed Mixes to Save Pollinators
Two new seed mixes designed to support wild bees and bumblebees are now on sale in Braunschweig. Visitors can purchase them at the Tourist Info office on Kleine Burg 14. The mixes form part of the city's ongoing 'Bee City Braunschweig' initiative to boost local pollinator populations. The Braunschweig Wild Bee Mix contains seeds from 39 native flowers and herbs. When planted, it can attract up to 66 different wild bee species. This mix grows to an average height of 60 to 120 centimetres and covers roughly 10 square metres, priced at €5.
The Bumblebee and Wild Bee Mix includes seeds from 36 native plant species, suited for normal to dry soils. It reaches heights of one to 1.5 metres and also covers about 10 square metres, costing €6. Both mixes were developed in collaboration with Rieger-Hofmann and the Julius Kühn Institute.
For best results, sowing is recommended between mid-March and early May or from mid-August to late September. The seed mixes aim to provide food and habitat for declining bee populations in the region. Residents and visitors can now contribute to the initiative by planting these mixes in gardens or green spaces. The products are available immediately at the Tourist Info office.
