Brandenburg an der Havel's LED Street Light Revolution: 1,533 Lights Converted, Savings Ahead
Brandenburg an der Havel is modernising its street lighting, with a significant portion of the city's lights now replaced with energy-efficient LED bulbs. The project, supported by a 711,232 euro grant from the state government, aims to reduce electricity costs and enhance safety.
The city's Department of Public Works has been leading the effort, replacing 757 light heads by the end of 2022 and another 521 in 2023. Plans are in place to retrofit a further 440 light sources in the coming year and 265 more this year. Over 700 light points in industrial areas have already been converted to LED, contributing to substantial energy savings.
Notable landmarks like St. Katharinen Church and the Old Town Hall have also received energy-efficient LED lighting, with a total of 29 light points converted. Similarly, 29 light points in the Domlinden and Mühlendamm areas have been upgraded to maintain their historical charm while improving efficiency. The city has also installed eight new mast lights at two pedestrian crossings for around 80,000 euros to enhance safety during the dark season. Future plans include illuminating a section of Erlenweg as part of new construction.
These measures have seen nearly 7 percent of the city's entire lighting renewed, contributing to a modern and energy-efficient infrastructure. While electricity costs for street lighting have risen to about 1.4 million euros in 2023, driving the conversion to LED lights, the city expects significant long-term savings and improved safety.
