BMW’s 800-volt breakthrough redefines electric vehicle power and charging

BMW has unveiled its sixth-generation eDrive platform, bringing major changes to electric vehicle technology. The new system features an 800-volt battery pack with faster charging and smarter energy management. AI-powered functions and bidirectional charging are also part of the upgrade.

The heart of the new platform is an 800-volt battery pack using cylindrical cells in a cell-to-pack layout. This design removes traditional modules and structural supports, creating a flatter pack. The result is better thermal control, improved coolant flow, and shorter electrical pathways.

The sixth-generation eDrive platform combines faster charging, smarter energy use, and two-way power transfer. These changes aim to improve efficiency for drivers and expand how electric vehicles interact with energy networks. The system is set to appear in BMW’s next wave of electric models.
