Berlin's Urban Future Debated: Bold Housing and AI Solutions Unveiled
Over 100 urban development experts gathered in Berlin-Kreuzberg for a high-profile debate on the city's future. The event, held as a live podcast at the historic Mampe brewery, tackled pressing issues like housing shortages, digital innovation, and public involvement in planning.
The discussions centred on bold solutions for Berlin's housing crisis. Tarek Massalme proposed adding two to three storeys to existing buildings to create new homes in crowded areas. Christoph Langhof pushed for taller constructions to ease the shortage, though no exact figures were given for potential new apartments.
Peter Schniering, founder of Future Cleantech Architects, opened the event with a keynote on sustainable urban planning. The panel then explored cutting-edge ideas, from AI-driven tendering—demonstrated by Ingmar Feldhoff of LETO—to eco-friendly cooling systems and alternative building materials. Anneke Scheper of Oxford Properties and Christian Hellmund from gmp Architekten examined ways to modernise and reuse buildings from the 1970s to 1990s. Meanwhile, Björn Leffler and Theresa Hümmler discussed Berlin's possible bid for a World Expo, highlighting how it could boost local development projects.
The event brought together architects, developers, and policymakers to rethink Berlin's urban landscape. Proposals ranged from vertical expansion to AI-powered construction, all aimed at addressing housing needs and sustainability. The outcomes could shape future planning decisions in the city.
