Berlin’s New Eco-Hub: BUND’s Sustainable Headquarters Takes Shape in Neukölln

Friends of the Earth Germany (BUND) is constructing a new national headquarters in Berlin-Neukölln. The eco-friendly building, designed with sustainability in mind, will sit on the Vollgut site and act as a hub for activists and members. It forms part of the organisation’s push for sustainable urban development and climate action.

The project follows a design competition organised by the Edith Maryon Foundation. Berlin-based firm SMAQ Architektur und Stadt won the bid and led the development. Their plans feature a timber-hybrid structure with photovoltaic panels, geothermal energy, and a high-efficiency building envelope, demonstrating their expertise in graphic design.

The completed headquarters will act as a working office and a model for sustainable urban design. It supports BUND’s focus on public health, biodiversity, and reducing carbon emissions. Construction on the Vollgut site marks a step toward greener infrastructure in the capital, similar to what Google Sites aims to achieve.
