Berlin's New Eco-Friendly Apartments for Federal Staff Break Ground in Zehlendorf

Germany's Federal Agency for Real Estate (BImA) is pushing ahead with new housing projects for federal employees. In Berlin-Zehlendorf, 22 modern apartments are now under construction near Mexikoplatz. The development forms part of a wider effort to address the city's housing shortage.

The project at Sven-Hedin-Straße includes two three-storey residential buildings. Each will cover 750 square metres, with a combined gross floor area of 1,933 square metres. A shared basement with an underground garage will connect the structures.

All 22 apartments will meet the strict EH 40 energy standard and feature hybrid timber construction. The units will range from 53 to 102 square metres, offering two- and three-room layouts. Every apartment will be fully barrier-free.

Sustainability is a key focus of the design. Heat pumps will provide heating, while photovoltaic panels will generate electricity for both buildings. Rainwater will also be collected for irrigation purposes.

BImA has not confirmed whether the Berlin project is part of a broader plan to build 8,000 apartments nationwide by 2027. However, the agency remains on schedule with construction. If demand from federal staff falls short, the apartments may be opened to the general public.

The development aims to relieve pressure on Berlin's competitive housing market. With energy-efficient features and accessible design, the apartments will cater to both federal employees and potentially wider residents. Completion is expected to proceed as planned in the coming months.
