Berlin's Marzahn District Transforms with 'Konnekt' - A Near-Zero CO₂ Community
Berlin's Marzahn district is set to undergo a significant transformation with the 'Konnekt' urban quarter. This ambitious project, developed by LABORGH, Kondor Wessels, and HOWOGE, aims to create a near-zero CO₂ emission community that reduces car dependency and incorporates renewable energy sources. The first phase, comprising 270 residential units, broke ground on October 20, 2025, with Berlin's Governing Mayor Kai Wegner and Senator for Urban Development Christian Gaebler in attendance.
The 'Konnekt' quarter will ultimately feature around 1,600 apartments, spread across approximately 107,000 square meters of living space and 22,000 square meters of commercial space. It will also include a daycare center, a youth leisure facility, and a community hub, while funding 138 primary school places in the surrounding area. The project's design will blend preserved industrial architecture with modern elements, retaining original brick structures and integrating them into the new layout.
The project continues the legacy of Georg-Knorr-Park, transforming the former industrial site into a socially diverse, ecologically minded urban neighborhood. It aims to serve as a model for sustainable urban development, focusing on smaller apartments suitable for trainees, students, and seniors in its initial phase.
The 'Konnekt' project, with its focus on sustainability and social diversity, is set to reshape Berlin's Marzahn district. With the first phase underway, the quarter promises to offer a blend of old and new, creating a unique, eco-friendly living space for its residents.
