Berlin's Elisabeth Meadows to become a 5,000-home sustainable urban district

Berlin-Pankow's new Elisabeth Meadows district now has a winning design. The project, covering 73 hectares, will create around 5,000 homes in a sustainable urban quarter. At least half of these will be affordable and aimed at community living.

The chosen plan comes from Hosoya Schaefer Architects AG and AgenceTer.de GmbH Landscape Architects. Their design focuses on green neighbourhoods connected by a large central park. Ecological standards and well-designed public spaces are key features.

The district follows Berlin's urban development strategy. It aims to become a 15-minute neighbourhood, where residents can easily access daily needs, work, and leisure. The project now moves into detailed planning. Senate guidelines for Elisabeth Meadows do not yet specify how many of the 5,000 homes will be built by cooperatives or building groups. This detail remains open as planning progresses.

Elisabeth Meadows will transform a large area of Pankow into a mixed-use, green district. With half the homes set as affordable, the project prioritises community and sustainability. Construction timelines and further specifics will emerge in the next planning stages.
