Berlin’s AEG site to transform into Humboldthain Quarter by 2030
Berlin’s historic AEG industrial site in Gesundbrunnen is set for a major transformation. The 6.5-hectare area will become the Humboldthain Quarter, a mixed-use district blending education, research, and culture. Construction is expected to begin by late 2025 after years of planning and legal approvals.
The site holds deep industrial significance, dating back to 1894 when AEG established one of its largest production facilities there. Now, after securing full legal clearance through Berlin’s zoning plan, the area is ready for redevelopment. The project, initiated by Deutsche Bahn and the Berlin Senate, was designed by local firm Ingrid Hentschel and Axel Oestreich, with Cobe Architects winning the urban design competition.
The redevelopment marks a significant shift for the area, repurposing historic industrial land for contemporary use. With demolition starting in late 2025 and completion planned for 2030, the Humboldthain Quarter will add a major commercial and cultural district to Berlin’s cityscape. The project’s sustainability credentials and public spaces are set to shape its long-term impact.
