Berlin Apartment Transformed into Spacious, Inspiring 'Blue Box' Home

A once-cramped Berlin apartment has been transformed into a spacious, inspiring home. The 'Blue Box' project, led by Ester Bruzkus and Peter Greenberg, has opened up the space and made clever use of every inch.

The design team began by removing all walls, creating an open-plan area. They then introduced a sky-blue curtain to divide the living and sleeping zones when needed. To maximize space, they utilised underutilized areas like the space beneath the stairs for storage.

The 'Blue Box', a deep-blue wooden built-in, serves multiple functions. It anchors the space and visually defines different living zones while connecting them. The team also incorporated a cabinet, wall paneling, banquette, and shelving into the design. Mirrors were used to create the illusion of more space and reflect light throughout the apartment.

The apartment now boasts a rooftop terrace, offering stunning views over Prenzlauer Berg. The dining area and living space are subtly defined, with a Beni Ourain rug marking the living area.

The 'Blue Box' project has successfully transformed a soulless, maze-like space into a more inspiring layout. By using multifunctional design strategies and clever storage solutions, the apartment now feels spacious and inviting, making the most of its small size.
