Bergisch Gladbach’s Bold Plan to Light Up Unsafe Areas for Women

A new campaign called Illuminate the Darkness is launching in Bergisch Gladbach to address safety concerns for women and girls. Organised by the Women’s Union Rhein-Berg, the initiative commences on November 25—the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women. Its aim is to highlight unsafe public areas and advocate for tangible improvements.

The campaign centres on gathering firsthand experiences from local residents. People are encouraged to identify areas that make them feel insecure, such as poorly lit streets or overgrown greenery causing blind spots. Action postcards will be used to collect these accounts, enabling participants to explain why certain locations feel unsafe.

The Illuminate the Darkness campaign spans from November 25, with residents’ input guiding future safety enhancements. Collected data will help pinpoint priority areas for intervention. The Women’s Union intends to use these findings to advocate for visible, long-term improvements in public spaces.
