Bamberg’s Schools and Kindergartens Bloom with Repurposed Wooden Modules

Wooden modules for schools and kindergartens Mobile constructions from the MitMachKlima project enhance Bamberg's school and kindergarten courtyards.

In 2024, under the joint initiative of machbar Bamberg e.V. and Bund Naturschutz Bamberg e.V., a so-called 'Wanderbaumallee' went on tour in the city of Bamberg as part of the MitMachKlima funding project. The specially made wooden modules brought fresh greenery to sealed-off streets, created new gathering places, and strengthened neighborhood cohesion. After the Wanderbaumallee was permanently planted at various locations in the city in the fall of 2024, the modules are now finding a new, long-term use in schools and kindergartens.

'The initiative not only enhances the school and kindergarten environments but also strengthens awareness of environmental and nature conservation in everyday life,' said Mayor Jonas Glüsenkamp.

Several schools and kindergartens in Bamberg had the opportunity to upgrade and green their school and playground areas, as well as outdoor spaces, using the plantable modules. Whether as a raised bed, bench, or herb garden - the possibilities are diverse. Children and young people can decide together how the wooden constructions will be used in the future, as a green gathering place, buzzing bee habitat, or decorative planting. The wooden modules were delivered directly to the institutions and can be designed and planted according to their own ideas and wishes. The project MitMachKlima covered the material and planting costs.

Schools and kindergartens in Bamberg are getting greener thanks to a new initiative. Wooden modules, once part of a travelling tree avenue, have been repurposed to brighten up outdoor spaces. The project also aims to teach children about nature and environmental protection in a hands-on way.

The wooden structures were originally created for the Wanderbaumallee (travelling tree avenue) by MitMachKlima, a local climate initiative run by the Kolping family association. After their initial use, the modules were donated to educational sites across Bamberg.

The repurposed wooden modules have given Bamberg’s schools and kindergartens a fresh, eco-friendly upgrade. By involving children in the design process, the project fosters a direct connection to nature. The initiative’s long-term impact will depend on how these green spaces are maintained and used in daily learning.
