Augsburg’s New Urban Forest Grows with Community-Led Tree Planting

Augsburg has launched a new green initiative called Bürgerpark Nord, inviting residents to help create a vibrant urban forest. The project kicked off with the planting of its first tree, a silver linden, by the city’s environmental commissioner. Over time, the area will transform into a biodiverse green space with a mix of trees and shrubs.

The forest will cover around 7,000 square metres north of the Hammerschmiede district. Residents can take part by donating trees, with 48 species and 126 types of field shrubs available—many chosen for their climate resilience. The goal is to build a space rich in biodiversity while offering recreational benefits for the community.

The Bürgerpark Nord project relies on community involvement to grow a green space that boosts biodiversity and recreation. With regular planting events and a wide selection of climate-adapted plants, the forest will take shape over several years. Residents can contribute by donating trees and joining future planting days.
