Assamese literary icon Najibur Rahman honored in heartfelt memorial tribute
A memorial tribute was recently held to honour the late Najibur Rahman at Rangalu High School. The main event, organized by Rangaloo Swarna Sakha of Asam Sahitya Sabha, brought together writers, educators, journalists, and community members. They gathered to celebrate Rahman’s lasting impact on Assamese language, literature, and social harmony.
The tribute began with reflections on Rahman’s life, as distinguished guests shared personal stories and insights. His dedication to scholarship and community service was a central theme. Dr Sarat Borkatoki, speaking at the event, stressed the importance of writers in shaping a conscious and progressive society. He also highlighted Rahman’s deep connection to the Asam Sahitya Sabha and his efforts to promote linguistic inclusiveness.
A key moment came with the release of Swapnadrasta Najibur Rahman, a tribute volume edited by Ghana Kanta Borah. Dr Borkatoki officially unveiled the book, which captures Rahman’s legacy. The Najibur Rahman Memorial Award was then presented to Ghana Kanta Borah himself, recognizing his lifelong work in journalism and education. The award included a traditional Gamosa, Seleng, a commemorative book, japi, memento, felicitation letter, and a cash honorarium. The event closed with a collective pledge to uphold Rahman’s ideals. Attendees committed to continuing his mission of linguistic unity, cultural pride, and harmony.
