Assam Farmer Turns ₹1.25 Lakhs Profit with Rare Chayote Crop

A farmer in Assam has transformed his fortunes by growing chayote, a crop rarely seen in the region. Bhakteswar Sonowal, 44, from Dhemaji District, now earns lakhs annually from just two bighas of land. His success is inspiring others to shift from traditional rice farming to more profitable vegetables and high-value crops.

Sonowal’s journey began with a bold decision to plant chayote, also known as chow chow, on part of his eight-bigha farm in Chabua. His first harvest produced 50 quintals, bringing in a profit of around ₹1.25 lakhs. This early success proved the crop’s potential in Assam, a state better known for rice cultivation.

Chayote, usually grown in winter regions, thrives in Sonowal’s fields, offering a steady income. Alongside this, he cultivates Assam lemon, strawberries, and other vegetables, ensuring year-round earnings. His approach demonstrates how diverse crops can replace seasonal farming. Sonowal’s achievements have not gone unnoticed. Many local farmers now follow his lead, adopting chayote and other vegetables to reduce Assam’s reliance on external markets. Access to quality seeds from Sipajhar’s local market has further supported this shift, boosting agricultural productivity in the region. Looking ahead, Sonowal plans to expand chayote farming across more of his land. By integrating it with other crops, he aims to create a sustainable model for higher profits and consistent yields.

Sonowal’s story highlights how innovation in farming can change livelihoods. His success with chayote has encouraged others to explore new crops, reducing Assam’s dependence on traditional rice farming. With continued growth, his methods could reshape the region’s agricultural economy for the better.
