Archbishop Urges Catholics to Fight Death Penalty as Respect Life Month Begins
Archbishop Mark Rivituso of Mobile has called on Catholics to advocate against capital punishment, as Respect Life Month begins in the U.S. Catholic Church on October 1. This comes as eight men, including Lance Shockley, face execution in seven states during the month.
The Catholic Mobilizing Network, led by Director Emmjolee Mendoza Waters, has been actively working towards abolishing the death penalty worldwide. Waters recently met with Lance Shockley, who is scheduled for execution in Missouri on October 14. Despite searches, no information was found about a priest meeting Shockley in Missouri.
Archbishop Rivituso, who has advocated for individuals on death row in Missouri and Alabama, encourages Catholics to participate in the Novena to End Capital Punishment from October 1-9. Capital punishment, he believes, is an affront to the sanctity of life and the dignity of all human beings. During Respect Life Month, Catholics are invited to reflect on these values and take action, such as visiting the Catholic Mobilizing Network's website to support those facing execution.
As Respect Life Month begins, the Catholic Church in the U.S. urges its members to stand against capital punishment. With eight executions scheduled, including Lance Shockley's on October 14, the need for advocacy is pressing. The Catholic Mobilizing Network provides resources and actions for those who wish to participate in this effort.
