Archaeological demolition unearths 1776 salt storage facilities
Torrevieja's Eras de la Sal to Become a Public Heritage Asset
Torrevieja, Spain, is set to enrich its cultural landscape as the Eras de la Sal, a historic salt storage facility, is set to become a public heritage asset. This transformation will offer educational opportunities and cultural enrichment for both locals and visitors.
The archaeological renovation project at the former Grupo de Empresa building in Torrevieja is led by Professor José Manuel Martínez Jiménez from the University of Alicante. Hired by the Torrevieja City Council, the team's mission is to preserve and showcase the city's historical identity.
The redevelopment project, an investment of €6.5 million, is expected to take approximately eighteen months. The aim is to strike a balance between conservation and modernisation, ensuring the area's historical significance remains intact while catering to modern needs.
The Eras de la Sal excavation serves as a reminder of Torrevieja's long-standing connection to the salt trade. The city's economy flourished during the late 18th century due to these salt warehouses, with the West Pier following in 1829 and the East Pier and the initial salt depot at the foot of the Torre Vieja constructed in 1776.
Demolition works at the former Grupo de Empresa building have uncovered archaeological remains dating back to 1776. These remains, associated with the historic Eras de la Sal salt storage and transport facilities, have revealed structural elements of the old salt warehouses, including foundations and stonework used to store and move salt.
The archaeological works are being overseen by an archaeological team contracted by the Orihuela City Council. Archaeologists and historians involved in the project have noted that the remains offer insights into construction techniques, storage methods, and urban planning practices of the late 18th century.
The unveiling of these remains highlights the increased interest in industrial archaeology in Spain. Plans for the area include the creation of functional and cultural spaces that preserve the city's heritage while serving modern needs.
Local authorities have pledged to maintain regular updates for the public, ensuring transparency throughout the redevelopment process. The municipal spokesperson stated that the project honours Torrevieja's history while providing spaces that meet contemporary needs.
Construction will proceed in parallel with archaeological work, ensuring minimal disruption to the excavation site. The project is set to become a showcase for Torrevieja's historical identity, offering educational opportunities and cultural enrichment for all.
