Torrevieja, Spain, is set to enrich its cultural landscape as the Eras de la Sal, a historic salt storage facility, is set to become a public heritage asset. This transformation will offer educational opportunities and cultural enrichment for both locals and visitors.
The archaeological renovation project at the former Grupo de Empresa building in Torrevieja is led by Professor José Manuel Martínez Jiménez from the University of Alicante. Hired by the Torrevieja City Council, the team's mission is to preserve and showcase the city's historical identity.
The redevelopment project, an investment of €6.5 million, is expected to take approximately eighteen months. The aim is to strike a balance between conservation and modernisation, ensuring the area's historical significance remains intact while catering to modern needs.
The Eras de la Sal excavation serves as a reminder of Torrevieja's long-standing connection to the salt trade. The city's economy flourished during the late 18th century due to these salt warehouses, with the West Pier following in 1829 and the East Pier and the initial salt depot at the foot of the Torre Vieja constructed in 1776.
Demolition works at the former Grupo de Empresa building have uncovered archaeological remains dating back to 1776.
