Amy Sedaris’s Tiny Greenwich Village Apartment Became a Creative Haven
A small one-bedroom apartment in Greenwich Village has served many purposes over the years. Purchased by Amy Sedaris in 2017, the space became far more than just guest quarters above her own home. Sedaris transformed the flat into a flexible retreat for friends and creative projects. When comedian John Early visited New York, she turned it into a temporary gym and sanctuary for him. During the run of Oh, Mary! at Christopher Street, performer Cole Escola stayed there between shows. The apartment even doubled as a writing space for Sedaris while she worked on the third season of At Home With Amy Sedaris. The decor came together with help from friends and collaborators. Fashion designer Adam Selman, now the executive creative director of Victoria’s Secret, contributed to the styling. He crafted a set of hanging garment bags for the bedroom closet, adding a personal touch. Sedaris and Selman first met in 2007 when he was designing costumes for Dolly Parton’s Better Get to Livin’ music video. Another designer, Christian Cowan-Sanluis, also played a role in shaping the apartment’s look. Known for his bold aesthetic, he assisted with the room’s decoration alongside Selman and Sedaris. What began as extra living space above Sedaris’s home became a hub for creativity and hospitality. The apartment hosted performers, supported writing projects, and showcased the work of designers like Selman and Cowan-Sanluis. Its many uses reflect the varied talents of those who passed through its doors.
