Americans express a sense of relief and lightness: Their sentiments on relocating to Denmark
Denmark has become an attractive destination for American researchers looking to escape the political climate back home. But what's it like for regular folks making the move? We asked some US expats in Denmark to share their thoughts.
The Scandinavian Allure
Reports suggest that prestigious US universities are looking to establish a presence in Denmark, with institutions like Princeton, Yale, MIT, and Harvard expressing interest in job opportunities. But what should one expect if they're considering a move to this Nordic country?
Five expats responded to our survey, all of whom hail from the United States and recommended Denmark to fellow Americans. Here's their advice.
Embrace the Lifestyle
"You will make new friends if you join a sporting group of some kind," advises Stefanie Astrakhan, originally from Chicago, now living "forever" in Ebeltoft on the east coast of Jutland. "While Denmark is a western country, it is not the US!" A pro-tip from Ray Nance, a New Mexico native now living in Ramløse, around 50 km north of Copenhagen: "Be prepared to make changes. Embrace the differences! Learn from them! Be willing to change!"
Job Hunting Tips
Aidan Frank, a Philadelphia native now residing in Copenhagen district Amager, advises, "The difficulty in finding a job without a network." Finding employment in Denmark is challenging, even for highly educated expats, especially in government-managed sectors, necessitating proficiency in Danish.
Cultural Shifts
"[Danes] do not do small talk," points out an anonymous respondent. "The grocery store clerk doesn't care about your day and finds it weird you would ask about his." Be prepared to adapt to Denmark's distinct social norms and communication styles.
The Safety Net
Denmark boasts a strong social safety net, providing affordable healthcare and quality childcare options. However, the services may not function as one might expect from their perception of the American welfare system.
Pros and Cons
Despite the high cost of living, the respondents agree that Denmark offers a high standard of living, excellent educational opportunities, and a healthy work-life balance. Taxes may seem steep, but when you factor in the lack of need for healthcare and childcare expenses, many expats find that their disposable income remains relatively stable.
In conclusion, moving to Denmark can be an enriching experience, but expats should be aware of the cultural differences, the job market, and the high cost of living. Keep an open mind and be willing to adapt to Denmark's unique societal norms and lifestyle, and you'll likely find that the move is worth it.
