Álvaro Obregón Transforms Old Christmas Trees Into Green Rewards for Locals
A recycling campaign in Álvaro Obregón is turning old Christmas trees into green benefits for residents. The local government has already collected nearly 3,000 pine trees as part of its 'Tree for a Tree, Your City Turns Green' initiative. In return for their trees, participants receive either an ornamental plant or a bag of compost.
The programme runs until February 15, 2026, and encourages residents to drop off their natural Christmas trees at designated collection points. These include the Explanade of the Multi-Purpose Hall, the Environmental Preservation and Conservation Office, the Composting Plant, Walmart Axomiatla, Walmart Las Águilas, Walmart Plateros, and Sam’s Club San Jerónimo.
Before handing over their trees, residents must remove all decorations, lights, nails, and stands. Once collected, the trees are taken to a composting facility, where they are shredded and turned into organic fertiliser. The campaign does not publicly list specific organisers or officials overseeing its execution. However, the borough government has promoted the effort as a way to recycle holiday waste while giving back to the community.
The initiative offers a practical solution for disposing of Christmas trees while supporting sustainability. Residents who take part will leave with either a new plant or compost, and the recycled trees will be repurposed as fertiliser. The campaign continues to accept trees until mid-February 2026.
