Alpharetta's Super Adopt-A-Thon finds homes for 150 shelter dogs in one day

A major pet adoption event took place in Alpharetta on Sunday. Lifeline Animal Services hosted its first Super Adopt-A-Thon, offering 150 dogs from Fulton and DeKalb counties to potential owners. The gathering aimed to match animals with new homes as shelters brace for busier summer months.

The event featured a wide range of dogs to fit different lifestyles and households. Volunteers urged visitors to approach each animal with an open mind, helping them find the right match. Adoption applications were accepted on-site, with Fulton and DeKalb animal services processing requests continuously.

Local shelters have faced rising challenges in recent years. In 2023 alone, Fulton County Animal Services took in 7,892 dogs, while DeKalb County saw 4,512 admissions. Combined, the two counties handled 12,404 dogs last year. Lifeline Animal Project has also reported a 30% surge in intakes over the past two years, marking a record high. Adopting a dog brings more than just companionship. Studies suggest that pet ownership can improve both physical and mental well-being. With warmer weather approaching, shelters anticipate even higher intake numbers, making adoption events like this one increasingly important.

The Super Adopt-A-Thon provided an opportunity for many dogs to find homes. Shelters in Fulton and DeKalb continue to accept applications year-round. The event highlighted the ongoing need for adoptions as intakes rise during the summer season.
